Fun But Utterly Useless Trivia

The Vatican (Papal States) was the only political entity to grant recognition to the Confederate States of America during the Civil War (1861-1865).

Playing For Change: Global Music Collaboration by Roger Ridley, Grandpa Elliot, etc

This video just made my day. It's amazing what can be accomplished with a simple laptop, a mic, the internet and a few very simple talented musicians.

Superbowl XLIII: Congratulations Steelers

Superbowl XLIIISuperbowl XLIII was probably one of the least hyped superbowl in recent years, I'm not sure whether this had anything to do with the current state of the economy. I personally didn't expect much of a match-up and by half time, it was already looking like it was going to be a blow-out, much to the chagrin of the die-hard Cardinals fans I was watching the game with.

The half-time commercials were even less interesting and NBC seems to have been so desperate that they sold a spot to the rip-off outfit Cash4Gold with MC Hammer (When was the last time this dude was on TV?). I'm sure he is a real Cash4Gold customer.

The second half of the game was much more exciting and for a while I thought the Cardinals were actually going to win, until the Steelers delivered an almost perfect drive ending in one of the best touchdown catches I have seen since the days of Chris Carter. Congrats Steelers - especially for Tomlin - this guy is just a great coach and adds to the long list of coaches Minnesota teams have let go that end up winning championships.

Gutsy or Stupid: Robbie Madison's 120 ft Jump on a Motorbike

WOW! I don't know whether to call this courage or just plain stupidity, but this guy is just impressive. It's amazing what a human being can do when they put their minds into it and don't mind the next day's news reading 'he died doing what he loves most'. This trait must really throw nature into a tailspin and unable to decide whether it is good or bad. The laws of natural selection favor traits that ensure survival and reproduction, but this trait, seen as macho and adventurous, attracts mates and gets passed on. These guys never live long but they always have hot chicks and their kids always want to do or outdo what their dads did. How fitting that the whole thing was sponsored by Red Bull, it must really give you wings, or turn your balls into steel.

Operation 'Arctic Blast' - Enjoying Minnesota Winters

Every time winter comes around in Minnesota, which seems to be earlier and earlier each year, I, and most people I know, start cussing and saying that I am getting out of here before the next winter comes. My life then gets reduced to a borderline state of hibernation, only leaving the warmth of the house when I absolutely have to, such as when there is no more food in the fridge or to make that dreadful run to the liquor store to stock op for the long awaited Sunday footbal games, which in most cases end up in heartbreaking disappointment by the constantly mediocre Vikings. This usually goes on for the entire winter, which usually runs through April and into May on one some years.

As soon as it gets nice and warm I tend to forget how bad the winter was, and plans to move seem to get pushed to the back-burner until old-man winter strikes again, then the cycle is repeated all over again. I have decided to take a different approach lately, since winter is here again and I am still here - if winters are that bad, there wouldn't be people living around here, there must be something I am not doing right. The only thing I don't like about livnig here is the winter. They say the best way to overcome your fears is to face them, by the same token, I think the best way to like something you hate is to enjoy it.

I used to roller-blade back in my college days and I have not done it in over 5 years. As part of 'Operation Arctic Blast', I decided to go to the ice rink with some friends. Ice sking may look a lot like inline skating, but I found out the differences the hard way on the ice. I was able to get going without falling too many times, but I soon found out that you are able to go much faster on ice and stopping is totally different from roller blading. I have a few bumps and bruises, but I can't wait to get on the ice again. What the heck have I been thinking all these years?

Click the picture for the complete gallery, I couldn't post many of the pictures because the person taking them (me in some cases) was either airborne in the process of falling or already on their butts.

The Worst Way To Die

I just ran into one of the most most horrifying ways to die I have ever seen. Just imagine some parasite injecting you and laying an egg in your brain. You start getting these constant migraine headaches for weeks as the egg matures and hatches in your head. The headaches get worse and you start losing some brain functions like hearing, sight, sense of smell, control of your limbs before losing sanity as the maggot eats your brain tissue. The maggot undergoes metamorphosis, then releases a chemical that makes your neck decompose and your head eventually falls off while you are still alive. The grown maggot then drills a hole in your skull and flies away to look for the next victim!! Well, it's not really a human parasite, but just imagine if such a creature ever comes into existence from space or somewhere. Check out the video (not recommended for the faint hearted):

Change Has Come

I got some free time in my hands as I lazed around digesting the turkey and goodies from thanksgiving dinner, and instead of going to burn money I don't have at BestBuy despite the nearly uncontrollable urge, I decided to do a facelift on the site. Some credit to Obama for the 'Change' and 'Yes We (I) Can!' phrases that kept echoing in my head pushing me on. The old design was nearly two years old and I was getting a little tired of it, hopefully the fresher look will encourage me add content more often. I also decided to change the domain name for something more hip and catchy. I have also linked my twitter feeds, which are also linked to my Facebook status updates, so I have no excuse of lack of a computer when I fail to make updates. I'm still fixing the plumbing, so look out for slippery spots and feel free to send me any feedback, or cast a vote on the poll to the right.
Cheers.

Feed Your Family for a Week

We have been seeing protests and even riots in the news lately about the rising cost of food all over the world. Here is a picture I ran into, I'm not sure what the time reference is, probably early 2008, and the contrast may be even worse taking inflation into account.

EDIT 07/15/08: I didn't pay attention to this when I was posting, but just compare the amount of vegetables and processed food for the American family vs the other families.

Back to Basics - Transportation of The Future

Could this be the sight in every city in the near future? With the price of gas skyrocketing with no signs of letting up, it looks like people are already giving up driving and returning to the trusty old bicycle - arguably one of the most efficient (energy conversion-wise) ways of travel ever invented. In a car with 1 passenger, only 3% of the energy is used move the person, the other 97% is 'wasted' moving the car. With a bike it's almost the complete opposite.

Forget magnetic levitation, flying cars and back-pack rockets you see in science fiction movies - we will all be cycling, and you had beter start practicing now. The 'boda boda' guys were ahead of the curve and saw what was coming. Next time you ride on a 'boda boda', tell the 'driver' (it cannot be rider, or who is the rider here?) this is the future.

Click on the pictures for more. They are mostly in Amsterdam, but the sight is getting more and more common in many cities.

Karma: Nigerian 419 Scammer Gets Scammed

It always feels so good to see a thug get a dose of his own medicine. I ran into this story about a Nigerian 419 scammer getting scammed, and I just couldn't help laughing as I read through it. The story is abit old, but it is funny. It's kinda long, but it's just funny seeing how the guy gets baited and falls for the same tricks he uses - hook  line and sinker, and he even ends up getting a painful tatoo - something he will take to the grave. He then sends his actual picture that gets posted all over the web. Poor dude.

Saved by oven gloves

Old man winter is back again in MN, and we just never seem to learn. Everytime the first storm arrives, we all act like we have never had winter before. So here I am on Tuesday morning, heading home from work at 3pm - usually a 20 minute drive - trying to beat traffic. I see the gauge is almost on E, but I know I usually have 30 miles to go when it hits E (learned out of my habitual procrastination), and I decide to get on the freeway and gas at the station near home, they usually have decent cappuccino there too - compared to the bitter concoction Super America has. After a couple miles, the freeway turns into a parking lot, with cars moving at a walking pace. Before long the gas warning light comes on,  and 1 mile from the next gas station exit the car stalls. I was lucky the first person I call is home.

I have never had much faith in the weather guy and I had ignored what I thought was an over-dramatized forecast and left my gloves at home. Soon it starts getting cold and somehow I find these oven gloves in the trunk - it took me a while to figure out how they got there - and I didn't hesitate to put them on. I didn't expect anybody to stop, and nobody did, then this snow plough comes by and nearly buries the car. Soon my ride arrives, and here I am, running down the freeway with oven gloves on - I can only imagine what the passing drivers were thinking. I got into the car, and we drove off. It was a while before the driver realized that I had oven gloves on and she cracked up and nearly lost control of the car then she decided to take this pic.

Oven Gloves

The first two stores were out of gas containers and I am imagining there was a whole bunch of other drivers in the same situation - that kinda made me feel good in a way, there were other people as dumb as me. In typical Moore's Law fashion, the ATM was out of service and the card reader in the store wouldn't work. The clerk had to open it up and clean it. The remaining part of the trip (less than 10 miles) took me another 1.5 hrs, and I didn't get home until 7:30. A typical 20 minute drive took me 4.5 hours but I know I have not learned, and I will not be shocked if this happens again.
